How to Smuggle Alcohol Onto a Cruise Ship

It may sound silly, but due to the incredibly high prices of alcoholic drinks on board cruise ships, many people try to sneak some of their own on board. There are literally hundreds of different methods that people use, some of them being more successful than others. Keep in mind that the security employees have probably seen just about everything, so unless you come up with an ingenious idea, there’s a good chance that you’ll be caught and have the alcohol taken away. Nevertheless, a good number of people still slip through the cracks, many of them using the methods outlined below. Note that we don’t endorse or encourage the use of any of the following methods; however, if you’re looking for a way to get alcohol on board, these are the most popular and most successful methods of doing so.

Wine BottleThe Wine Bottle

Most cruise lines allow each guest to bring one bottle of wine on board. The trick here is to bring a wine bottle, but fill it with your favourite spirit instead. Of course, the cruise lines are catching on, and stopping people if they notice that the wine bottle has been opened, so you’ll have to spend a little bit of time preparing it. If the bottle has a screw on cap, do your best to make sure it appears untampered with. Employees obviously don’t want to open a sealed bottle, therefore if they can’t tell if it’s sealed or not, they’re unlikely to try opening it. If the bottle has a cork, this can be a little more challenging, unless you hammer the cork back in with the help of a hammer. The good news is that if you do manage to get the cork back in, there’s pretty much zero chance that they’ll attempt to open it.

Shampoo and Listerine Bottles

Everyone has small bottles in their suitcases, containing items ranging from mouthwash to shampoo. One popular method is to empty and wash out these bottles, then fill them with your drink of choice. The good news is that it’s pretty much impossible for them to inspect every single bottle that goes through the x-ray. The downside is that if you’re caught, your booze will be confiscated.

Rum Runners

Rum runner flaskJust when you thought you’ve seen everything, in comes the Rum Runner. Rum Runners are small plastic pouches designed specifically for sneaking alcohol onto cruise ships. These “flasks” as they call them allow you to discretely carry alcohol on board, on your body. Seeing as there are rarely physical searches of passengers boarding the ships, you’ll likely be able to get away with it. The real question though is whether or not you’re willing to go to this much effort in order to save a few bucks.

Overall, there many methods for smuggling alcohol onto a cruise ship. There are also numerous other methods that we did not mention here, and cruisers are constantly dreaming up new ones. For many cruisers, the hassle associated with attempting to smuggle booze on board simply isn’t worth the time or effort. Others feel that due to the high prices of drinks on board, the savings are definitely worth it.  Another option, if you’re looking to save, but are unwilling to take the smuggling option, is to purchase one of the unlimited drinks plans offered by the cruise lines.
